    What is Crohn’s disease

Crohn's disease is an autoimmune disease, caused by the immune system's attacking the gastrointestinal tract; it is classified as a type of inflammatory bowel disease. There appears to be a genetic link to Crohn's disease, with the highest risk occurring in individuals with siblings who have the disease. Males and females are equally affected. Smokers are three times more likely to develop Crohn's disease.
    Site of effect:
It may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus.
    symptoms:
    1-It primarily causes abdominal pain.
    2-diarrhea (which may be bloody).
    3- vomiting.
    4- weight loss.
but may also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis and inflammation of the eye
    Systemic symptoms
-Among children, growth failure is common. As Crohn's disease may manifest at the time of the growth, up to 30% of children with Crohn's disease may have retardation of growth
-Fever may be present, if fevers above 38.5 ˚C , there is a complication such as an abscess Among older individuals
    Diagnosis:
a colonoscopy is approximately 70% effective in diagnosing the disease with further being less effective .The diagnosis of Crohn's disease can sometimes be challenging, and a number of tests are often required to assist the physician in making the diagnosis.

Some blood tests can help in the diagnosis of chron's diseases
Simple stool examination to look for any blood and to see if the stool is loose

      1. ESR( or the much better and more accurate the C-reactive protein) to see if there is any elevation especially if it accompanied with increase in WBCs to confirm the inflammatory process .

      2. Liver functions test

      3. Renal function tests

      4. Calprotectin a test which is done in the stool which become positive if there is inflammatory bowel disease

      5. The anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) test is sometimes used to establish a diagnosis of Chron's or differentiate between Chron's and other types of inflammatory bowel disease. This means that if you have a positive ASCA, the chances that you have Chron's disease is 88%.
