    World Health Organization

    This Summary presents an overview of the results of the first and second rounds of WHO product testing of malaria antigen-detecting RDTs completed in 2008 and 2009 respectively, and is published in conjunction with the release of the results of Round 2. The results of the two rounds of testing should be considered as a single data set, and the full reports of both Rounds 1 and 2 consulted for further detail on product performance, and on the interpretation and use of these results.

    The RDT evaluations summarized here were performed as a collaboration between WHO, TDR, FIND, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other partners.

    All companies manufacturing under ISO 13485:2003 Quality System Standard were invited to submit up to 3 tests for evaluation under the programme. In the first round of testing, 41 products from 21 manufacturers were evaluated against prepared blood panels of cultured Plasmodium falciparum parasites, while 29 products from 13 manufacturers were evaluated in Round 2.

    Challenges for the future. Research on HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis
    Final report of the conference, 13-14 November 2008, Brussels

    European Communities, 2009

    The European Commission (DG Research) brought together a large number of stakeholders in an International Conference on Poverty-Related Diseases (PRDs) with the aim of increasing the impact of EU-funded research on controlling PRDs. Leading scientists, research managers, decision-makers, funding agencies and relevant international NGOs attended (over 350 representatives from 63 countries), with significant participation from disease-endemic countries.

    The goals of the conference were to:

    * regain political momentum for continuing and intensifying research addressing the “big three” global killer diseases;
    * set the scene by reporting on research efforts supported by the EC since 2002, when HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB first became a separate research focus under the EU’s 6th Framework Programme (FP6);
    * gather input from relevant stakeholders (scientists from Europe and disease-endemic countries, industry, funding agencies, global partners, etc.) in order to set research priorities on PRDs for the remainder of the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) and beyond.

    Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases

    This report, which presents the results of the first round of WHO product testing of malaria antigen-detecting RDTs, was completed in November 2008 in collaboration with FIND, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other partners.

    All companies manufacturing under ISO-13485 Quality System Standard were invited to submit up to 3 tests for evaluation. In this first round of testing, 41 products from 21 manufacturers were evaluated against prepared blood panels of cultured Plasmodium falciparum parasites and patient-derived P. falciparum and P. vivax parasites, and a parasite-negative panel. Thermal stability was assessed after 2 months of storage at elevated temperature and humidity, and a descriptive ease of use assessment was recorded.

    Lot testing of Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests
    Quality benefits all

    FIND/WHO

    Accurate diagnosis of malaria is vital to ensuring good management of febrile patients in malaria-endemic areas, and for monitoring the incidence of this potentially fatal disease. Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) play an important role in bringing accurate, rapid diagnosis and case management to whole populations who could never before be accurately diagnosed. To ensure good quality diagnostic results at the village level, test your RDT lots before sending them to the field.
