RED CELL INDICES
In order to convey to the clinician in an objective manner the findings of the hemoglobin, hematocrit and red cell count, indices denoting certain measurements of the average red cell have been devised which are in common usage.
MEAN CORPUSCULAR VOLUME M.C.V
The mean volume of the red cell in terms of cubic microns may be calculated from the formula
M.C.V. = Hematocrit (volume of packed red cells) X 10

Normal values:
femtoliters 80 - 100
MEAN CORPUSCULAR HEMOGLOBIN M.C.H
This the average quantity of hemoglobin in each corpuscle expressed in micromicrograms.
Calculation:
M.C.H. = gm. Hgb./100 ml. X 10

RBC in millions/cu. mm.
Normal values:
27 - 32 micromicrograms
MEAN CORPUSCULAR HEMOGLOBIN CONCENTRATION M.C.H.C
A more commonly used formula is that of the calculation of the concentration of hemoglobin in the average red cell. This value is derived from the following formula and is expressed in percent.
Calculation:
M.C.H.C. = gm. Hgb./100 ml. X 100

32 - 36%
