Hepcidin

:
Master iron regulatory hormone
Inactivates ferroportin (the ferrous iron porter to outside of cells) by binding it (Hepcidin binds ferroportin), leading to:
Stops iron getting out of enterocytes
Iron lost in stool when enterocytes shed
Stops RES macrophage release of iron
Leads to decreased intestinal iron absorption, and decreased mobilization of iron from storage sites.
When it is low then iron absorption and avialability are increased.
and the iron released from macrophages is increased.
this will cause microbial reproduction (if the patient has a microbe), cancer cells are replicated (if there are cancer cells), may cause hemachromatosis (iron overload
