The standard clinical specimen is venous plasma glucose. Glucose is metabolized at room temperature at a rate of 7 mg/dL/h (0.4 mmol/L/h); at 4°C, the loss is approximately 2 mg/dL/h ( Weissman, 1958 ). The rate of metabolism is higher with bacterial contamination or leukocytosis.
