Serodiagnosis of Syphilis
Specific Objectives:
1) Explain the theory of the RPR, VDRL, MHA TP, and FTA ABS procedures used in the diagnosis of syphilis.
2) Perform each of the above tests utilizing appropriate techniques.
3) Interpret accurately the results of the above tests, giving reasons for false positive and negative reactions, expected normal values, and diagnostic specificities of each test.
4) Explain the differences in specificity and sensitivity of the reaginic, or non specific tests for syphilis vs. the specific treponemal tests.
5) Correlate the serologic procedures used to establish and follow the diagnosis of syphilis with the appropriate stages in which each test is positive.
