Application of Fluorescence in situ hybridization
General Information
Cytogenetics is one of the important specialties of medical genetics that is used widely in genetic diagnosis. It provides with valuable information on that the numerical and structural abnormalities of chromosomes to the referred patients suspected of having some genetic abnormality.
This includes tissue culture, cell harvesting, chromosome preparation, banding and analysis under a bright field microscope. However, many cryptic chromosomal rearrangements including micro-deletions, duplications or telomeric rearrangements are often invisible at the routine microscopic resolution. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), is a molecular cytogenetic method, where specific fluorescently labeled probes are hybridized to the chromosome spreads of the patient to detect these micro-deletions or duplications. It is also used in confirming cryptic translocations and for rapid detection of numerical aberrations. This technique is mostly used as an adjunct to routine karyotyping. It has wide range of applications in prenatal, postnatal
and in cancer diagnosis, and today it has become one of the most essential component of genetic diagnosis.
Application of the technique and interpretation of FISH results demand vast experience and expertise in this specialized field. The workshop will be conducted by expert personnel in the field.
Dates, Location & Duration
The course will be held in the laboratories of CEGMR, King Fahd Medical Research Center based at King Abdul Aziz University. Lectures and practical sessions will be held daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Documents and Certificates
Participants who successfully complete the theoretical and practical sections will be awarded a certificate of completion.
Fees and Registration
will be 3000 SR charged. Fees will include break refreshments, lunch, all workshop materials and documentation. Registration is on the basis of first come first serve, therefore early registration is highly recommended.
